![]() ![]() I had mixed success and that’s putting it lightly. I’d heard that he was resistant to magic, so opted to try and beat him with melee and melee alone. ![]() That being said, I did attempt to take on Old King Allant in a more fair fashion for a while. The final real boss battle of Demon’s Souls, it’s perfectly possible to grind some souls and overlevel yourself to make this fight easier. Old King Allant is actually resistant to magic, but I still killed him in 4 casts of Homing Soul Arrow. I should note that I was tremendously overleveled for this particular bout. It’s also what gives him the second spot in my Demon’s Souls Boss Ranking! 3 – Old King Allant (False King) It’s these touches that endear FromSoftware titles to so many fans, and Demon’s Souls is no different. In this case Metas “The Knight of the Lance”. Each represents a legendary warrior that served under King Allant, but they’ve been twisted into demons that mirror their roles in King Allant’s army. What puts this boss above the next few, and the other bosses is the lore that he, and the other bosses of Boletaria, are steeped in. Even with the magic heavy build I was running (homing soul arrow for the win) Penetrator still killed me three times, and came close many many other times. Only a couple of other bosses come close in terms of difficulty, which we’ll get to shortly, and few can match the level of hype achieved. In terms of straight up melee combat, Penetrator is a proper hard skill check for the boss that follows and a rare boss difficulty spike throughout the Demon’s Souls Remake. Get backed up to a wall? You’re in trouble. This forces you to manage the distance between yourself and this boss. He will also string together long combos of attacks, with breaks to heal being rare. Every single one of Penetrator’s regular sword attacks can be rolled through, requiring strict stamina management. More’s the point, Penetrator is maybe one of only two examples in Demon’s Souls of the signature rhythm that Souls games exhibit in combat. The best bosses know how to make an entrance, and Penetrator understands that. He even has an awesome intro, stabbing a pesky Fat Official through the fog gate. Do you enjoy Dragonslayer Armour? Knight Artorias? How about Pontiff or the Abyss Watchers?Īll of them can be traced back to Penetrator, who could probably take the top spot on a different day. Penetrator is quite simply the proof of concept for every excellent Knight style boss that followed in Soulsborne games. The best Remakes can improve the atmosphere of a game by enhancing that visual immersion, and Demon’s Souls Remake proves that immensely with Flamelurker. A very worthy #1 on my Demon’s Souls boss ranking. Flamelurker himself has an incredibly well defined set of particle effects and animations that make him something of a delight to behold. The arena that Flamelurker commands now looks like something ripped out of Doom Eternal, instead of a red and blurry eyesore. Along with this, the Demon’s Souls Remake elevates this boss even higher thanks to the visual improvements. Calm approach play, well timed dodges, and a good sense of awareness will make Flamelurker much, much easier to steamroll than you might expect. Huge damage output, good manoeuvrability, and an arena that will kill you given the chance.īut, unlike many bosses in FromSoftware’s portfolio, this isn’t a boss with a health bar the size of Mount Everest. But throughout every death it feels fair. A tough but incredibly well balanced fight, it channels something rarely achieved:įlamelurker is tough as balls, and a particularly dangerous DPS check if you happen to get there too early. This is gonna just be my subjective enjoyment of these bosses and what they brought to the world of Demon’s Souls! Fair warning, spoilers for every boss and their story within Demon’s Souls! 1 – Flamelurkerįlamelurker is the peak of Demon’s Souls boss design in my humble opinion. To be 100% clear, I’m not ranking all of the bosses from one singular variable like design, difficulty, lore implications, or anything like that. ![]() With the release of the Demon’s Souls Remake alongside the PS5, there’s room to revisit that famous ranking content! So, this is my Demon’s Souls Boss Ranking – Remake Edition! Today we’re talking about the originator – Demon’s Souls. Boss quality isn’t the most consistent aspect of FromSoftware’s game design, with boring and unimaginative bosses plaguing the suite of fantastic examples. I’m talking the Folding Screen Monkeys, Ceaseless Discharge, and The Witches of Hemwick. There’s middling options like Blood Starved Beast, Corrupted Monk, and Iron Golem. There’s winners, like Nameless King, Owl Father, and Lady Maria. Bosses are a crucial part of the FromSoftware experience. ![]()
